Step 1

Know your shutoff and contact details before rain arrives.

Small notes can save time when the household is under pressure. Fill these out before storm season and keep a printed copy where people can find it.

Check common water entry points while conditions are safe.

Do not climb roofs or use ladders in unsafe conditions. These are simple ground-level reminders to review before weather turns.

Clear visible debris near exterior drains, door thresholds, and low entry points if safe. Check that gutters and downspouts are directing water away from the home where visible from the ground. Move stored items away from garage doors, sliding doors, and known low spots. Photograph vulnerable areas before the storm, including ceilings with prior stains, exterior doors, and window areas. Place towels or absorbent materials near known minor seepage areas only when safe and appropriate.

Step 4

Create a photo baseline before damage happens.

If water damage occurs later, before-and-after photos can help you explain what changed. For coverage questions, contact your insurer or policy representative.

Take wide photos of rooms with prior leak history. Photograph ceilings, baseboards, flooring, and cabinets near known problem areas. Save photos of shutoff valves, appliance supply lines, and visible plumbing connections. Photograph exterior drainage paths, door thresholds, and garage entry points before the storm. Keep photos in a folder named with the date and property address or city.
